在电泳显示器最常见的实现方式中，数以百万计的微小二氧化钛（TiO2）颗粒悬浮在碳氢化合物和黑色染料的载体溶液中，每个颗粒的直径约为一微米（千分之一毫米）。这些二氧化钛颗粒被充电剂覆盖，使其带电。

经过处理后的颗粒，他们悬浮在两个平行导电板之间的油约10至100微米的间距。平行导电板连接到允许外部信号在显示器上不同精确点操纵电荷的电路。通过操纵电荷，粒子要么迁移到显示器表面，要么停留在显示器背面附近。这种效应被称为电泳，在电泳后显示被命名。

而在表面，二氧化钛粒子散射光线，呈现明亮的白色。靠近背面时，染料溶液使像素看起来像黑色。通过操纵整个显示屏上的电荷，可以创建图像。使用滤色器可以显示整个可见光谱。

电泳显示器的主要制造商是电子墨水公司，该公司为上述电子书设备制造显示器。电泳显示器的一个方便的方面是，它们可以使用相同的制造工艺制造——通过激光释放在塑料上的电子器件——目前用于大规模生产LCD屏幕。第一款使用电泳显示技术的手机是2006年发布的摩托罗拉Motofone。
