什么是网络监控？(network monitoring?)
网络监控是一种很好的间谍行为。事实上，这是你至少希望你的一个系统正在做的事情。当您的其他系统正在执行其重要功能时，您需要留出至少一台或一组计算机来监视网络活动。可以将此视为管理您的网络流量。
此网络监控必须由始终处于开启状态的系统完成。您的系统应该有专用电源线，或者至少有备用发电机。这是您网络中最关键的部分，因为如果出现问题，它会发出警报。
监视会注意到系统运行缓慢或出现故障，并将此类情况通知网络管理员。此类通知可以采取电子邮件、寻呼机提醒或普通的旧电话的形式。无论采用何种形式，网络问题消息都应具有最高优先级。
网络监控可以提醒网络管理员注意由过载的系统、崩溃的服务器、丢失的网络连接、病毒或恶意软件感染以及断电等引起的问题。最后一个例子就是系统需要备用电源的原因：如果本应执行通知的系统也失去电源，则无法很好地通知您断电。
为了监控网络，通常会向网络上的每台计算机或系统发送“ping”或测试。如果系统没有响应或响应时间过长，系统将通过通知网络管理员问题来完成其工作。ping旨在即时得到响应；除了没有ping之外，其他任何东西都暗示了一个更大的问题。
其他网络监控软件则定期拍摄网络工作流的虚拟快照。此工作流中的任何异常都会被记录下来，如果异常严重，会向网络管理员报告。一些著名的软件制造商生产独立产品的监控应用程序；其他制造商将软件嵌入到更大的应用程序或软件套件中。
网络监控也可以像跟踪网站的访问者流量一样基本，还可以跟踪访问时间、访问站点的页面数以及入口和出口URL等统计数据。这种监控不一定是报告问题的监控，除非网络管理员对其进行编程；相反，网站软件跟踪并报告网络活动以供分析。
