什么是结构钢设计？(structural steel design?)
钢是当今世界上最常用的建筑材料。自发明以来的100多年里，它的强度重量比、耐久性、弹性、柔韧性、生态友好性和朴素的审美情趣，使钢成为几乎所有现存大型商业建筑的整体结构部件。从摩天大楼到桥梁、汽车到轮船、管道到火箭门架，钢铁的耐久性和多功能性使这些现代文明的固定装置成为可能。。
当然，随着钢的出现，结构钢设计的概念应运而生。为了正确安装，钢结构的几何结构，例如，钢摩天大楼的建造中涉及的各种因素，必须进行计算和细化，通常是在所使用的钢材被浇铸之前。在钢结构从构思到安装的过程中，钢结构工程师是首批参与建造过程的专家之一。
与建筑设计不同，钢结构设计的本质是保证钢结构建筑、桥梁、车辆、塔楼等的结构完整性。结构钢设计包括熟悉不同类型的钢和钢基合金，依赖描述钢梁、柱、支撑、连接件和吊架的抗应力和承载系数的公式，以及对几何形状和施工数学的大量掌握。如果任何设计或物理组件出现故障，灾难是不可避免的结果。美学考虑更直接地来源于建筑师，与结构钢骨架的正确性能无关。。
钢结构设计已经从仅仅关注钢能够并确实提供结构的刚性发展到钢在结构灵活性方面提供的优势，使结构能够更好地抵抗自然和人类的应力。有趣的是，这种结构钢设计演变的主要推动力是地震。多层钢结构和长跨度钢结构的初步设计通常首先取决于结构承受大地震的有效性。抗风性也是高层钢结构设计和施工的一个主要因素，恐怖主义也是如此。。
在初期，钢结构设计是通过数小时艰苦的物理计算、绘图，以及经常的反复试验来完成的。随着钢材本身质量的提高，结构钢设计的力学也在提高。计算机辅助设计（CAD）也许是推进结构钢设计的最具创新性和最有效的工具，它减轻了结构工程师在物理计算和手工绘图中固有的繁琐和错误。CAD以显著更低的成本确保更快、更精确的设计过程。。
