语法意义是通过词序和其他语法信号在句子中表达的意义。也叫结构意义。语言学家区分语法意义和词汇意义(或外延)——也就是说,单个单词的字典意义。沃尔特·赫特尔指出“一个表达相同想法的词可以实现不同的句法功能。长期以来,投掷球的投掷和良好投掷之间的语法差异一直被归因于意义的差异,而不是字典中描述的词汇类型,而是语法中描述的更抽象、更正式的类型”(意义外的理解,2013)。

从动词结构到名词结构的变化不仅仅涉及这些句子中词类的变化。还有对意思的修改。动词强调活动,更大程度上意味着鞋子最终会干净,但名词表示活动更短、更草率,而且进行时没有什么兴趣,因此鞋子没有正确清洁。
