什么是网络计算机？(a network computer?)
网络计算机或NC是多台无盘计算机中的一台，这些计算机依赖并连接到另一台计算机，该计算机保存硬盘空间或处理信息。该术语最初由甲骨文在1996年注册，但现在指的是连接到公共服务器的计算机的任何安排。网络计算机也称为无盘节点、混合客户端或瘦客户端，它是一种无盘计算机，没有磁盘驱动器，完全依赖服务器进行信息存储，每次启动时都必须从中央服务器启动。
尽管类似，但无盘节点和瘦客户机有明显的区别。无盘节点可以自己进行信息处理，在启动时依靠服务器进行更复杂的信息处理。瘦客户机本质上依赖于服务器进行引导和所有信息处理。瘦客户机只处理自己的用户界面。
与带有硬盘驱动器的工作站的计算机网络相比，网络计算机布置具有各种优势。网络计算机的制造成本更低，运行和维护成本更低。它们也更容易更新，因为只需要更新服务器，而不需要更新整个网络。
网络计算机只能使用基本软件运行，从而降低了整个网络的成本。这种效率可能是有代价的。当许多工作站在使用时，无盘工作站和瘦客户机的工作速度可能会较慢，这会使中央服务器负担过重。
网络计算机的最初概念是在微软Windows95发布后不久产生的。甲骨文公司试图开发一种概念，通过引入一台没有操作系统的计算机，使微软的操作系统过时。相反，Oracle的网络计算机将依赖Oracle数据库来访问应用程序和存储信息。甲骨文的网络计算机将比微软的个人计算机便宜得多。
不幸的是，该产品在准备就绪之前就发布了。网络计算机运行缓慢，Oracle缺乏足够的基础设施来支持该产品。个人电脑价格下跌，使其对消费者更具吸引力，与网络电脑相比更具竞争力。甲骨文的网络计算机无法竞争，该产品被视为失败。
