Kill your Facebook news feed

I finally eradicated my Facebook feed with the Kill News Feed Chrome extension, and I do not miss it. Now I can search for exactly what I want to see and when, instead of mindlessly scrolling through random vacation photos and posts about how someone broke their phone so please email them (nah, I’m good, thanks). I’m not yet ready to go full #DeleteFacebook, but this is a good way to get rid of the mental clutter.

Lean in to your love of head massages

I bought some new head massagers. Those weird ones with the long, metal spider legs that envelop your scalp. Some people hate them, but I love them.

C***ider renting your wardrobe

I am doing a thing I never thought I would do: renting my clothes. I am bored with my wardrobe but commitment-averse, so here we are. So far, I’ve enjoyed the process: the service picks out items for you, but you can swap out as many of them as you like for other offerings in their inventory. (I swapped out all of them.) You can keep the clothes for as long as you want, and once you send them back, the process is repeated. So far the clothes have been fine—not especially exciting, but a nice break from my normal rotation. It’s like borrowing clothes from your friend who’s slightly more fashionable than you. And she won’t get annoyed if you return it wrinkled and in need of a wash: they do all the washing and dry cleaning.

Upgrade your hard drive—and your pet supplies

I bought a brand-new 4TB hard drive to replace the potentially dying / definitely aging 3TB hard drive I use for most of my system’s “don’t need to access it very often, but don’t want to put it on the NAS box” storage. I also got a new litterbox for my cat, Colbert, and will ask him what he thinks of the upgrade for next week. Though I contemplated it as a fashion upgrade this week, I did not end up purchasing the “What the Pug” t-shirt I saw at last weekend’s Silicon Valley Comic Con. I’m still tempted.

Get granular about your favorite albums

This week I’ve been listening to a meticulous track-by-track ****ysis of Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” on the podcast Dissect. tl80 video Adam Powers turned me onto it. I already loved the album, but I knew barely anything about the autobiographical and referential layers of meaning behind each line. I also appreciate the ****ysis of samples, song structures, and chord progressi***. It’s like the more famous podcast Song Exploder, but entirely centered on MBDTF. (An earlier season covered Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly.“)

Stop paying Coinstar for something you can do yourself

I got coin wrappers and deposited all of the change I’ve been accumulating over the past 3 years or so. It added up to $81, and by wrapping everything myself and depositing straight in the bank, I avoided those pesky Coinstar fees.

Stop reading books you don’t enjoy

I fell behind on my reading goal last month, but this week I managed to finish a book and make decent progress into a second, so I’m still feeling optimistic that I’ll hit my year-end target. (It turns out the key to reading more is picking books you actually want to read, rather than books other people you don’t really know suggest. Who knew!)

Get your finances in order

My hu**and and I are working on spring cleaning our finances, much like Alicia suggested. We tackle a little bit each night, but what’s interesting is what we do in the meantime. We’ve agreed to text each other every time we spend money—even if it’s just groceries or little things like a cup of coffee. In the meantime, we’re holding off on most non-essential spending. I wouldn’t want to keep this up forever, but it’s been great to be extra mindful about money and about communicating with each other.

(Gently) stop your cat from destroying your furniture

My angel of a kitten has started the unfortunate habit of turning into a m***ter at night: scratching at the door, knocking over lamps, and generally causing mayhem. I was reluctant to punish him, because he’s just so cute; he doesn’t mean it, etc. So my hu**and took the role of bad cop and started to use a spritzer bottle of water to shoo him away. Classic trick, but I still felt bad. Turns out the bottle works just as well when it’s empty. Just the sound of the spritzer sends him scurrying.

Eat fewer meals at your desk

As part of my ongoing efforts to do less eating at my desk, I’ve started making and eating breakfast at home. It takes a little more time out of my mornings, but it’s a much nicer, more peaceful way to start the day— and also doesn’t leave me ravenous and woozy if I get stuck underground forever on the commute into the office, which seems to happen almost every day at this point.
