My wife and I held our own **all New Year’s Eve gathering for the second year in a row, with under a dozen guests, and no one getting totally sloshed, and it was such a relief. Downgrade: We realized our streaming app was on a delay, rendering the Times Square ball-drop useless. So we did the Phil Collins version of the “start your year off right” meme, but HE GOT THE TIMING WRONG.

Stick to Your New Year’s Cleaning Resoluti***

I organized my closet and dresser. I deep-cleaned my bathroom and added this shower caddy, which I love. I bought a hamper that comes with a removable laundry bag for easy apartment-to-laundromat transportation. My roommates and I cleaned our kitchen, including decluttering a towering shelving unit filled with food and cookbooks. Basically, I spent all of my money at the Container Store, but it was worth it.

Stand in the Place That You Work

On the first day of 2018, a chat about meditation somehow spiraled into a search on Craigslist for a standing desk. By the middle of the week, after a few emails, a pair of text messages, and one incredibly harrowing Lyft ride, I was the proud owner of a used standing desk. I’m skeptical of the whole “standing desk” movement but the positive effects standing could have on my day-to-day activities, coupled with the negative effects of sitting on your behind all day, are too risky for me to ignore. New year, new desk.

Don’t Settle for Cold Coffee

Our New York offices have been freezing recently, and when it’s not possible to work from home, we’ve all been coming up with workarounds. For me, that’s meant keeping a blanket at my desk, and also ordering one of these desk coffee mug warmers, the kind of tiny office tchotchke that makes a surprisingly big difference. My tea can’t keep my hands warm if it gets cold after five minutes!

Lounge Around in Genie Pants

The other day, I bought stretchy-waisted velvet cropped pants on sale at Anthropologie, and it is possible that I haven’t taken them off since. My hu**and says I look like Aladdin, and I kind of do, but I love them a lot. They are so comfortable and feel fancier than my usual yoga pants. It’s a new year, and it’s nice to feel fancy.

Don’t Fake Being a Morning Person

As a writer trying to complete a few projects in my free time, I’d been struggling to write in the mornings. I am not a morning person; I can get up if required to do so, because I’m an *****, but opting to get up before the sun makes me want to weep, because I’m still kind of a baby. (Although I guess babies do get up before the sun shines. But I digress.) Anyway, this week I started a new habit: I’m writing at night. And sure, maybe I’m worn out from a long day of life hacking. Maybe my mind would be clearer at dawn. I don’t care. I don’t have to drag myself out of a warm bed while it’s pitch black out anymore. And if I have a bad writing session, it doesn’t ruin my entire day.
