虽然“Feb-RU-ary”仍然被认为是标准发音，但大多数词典认为没有第一个“r”（“Feb-U-ary”）的二月发音是可以接受的变体。
关于宣布二月的不同意见
不是每个人都这么宽容。纯粹主义者查尔斯·哈林顿·埃尔斯特（Charles Harrington Elster）在他的《野兽般的发音错误》（2005）一书中为“传统而有教养的发音”辩护，“是一个不同的词，一个不同的月份，有着特殊的拼写，特殊的发音，以及非常特殊的天数，所有这些都说明了一个事实，那就是我们必须特别尊重这个生物。”

为什么人们在二月份放弃“r”
二月发音中第一个“r”的缺失（部分）是一个被称为异化（或单音学）的过程的结果，在这个过程中，一个单词中两个相似的声音中的一个有时会被改变或删除，以避免该声音的重复。（图书馆的发音有时也会出现类似的过程。）
更简单地说，正如凯特·布里奇（Kate Burridge）在《单词花园里的杂草》（2005）中指出的那样，二月的标准发音“需要相当大的努力，在正常的快速发音中，我们可能会去掉第一个“r”。此外，一月的发音可能也促成了二月的简化发音。
