什么是乘用车？(a passenger car?)
客车是火车上载客的车辆。除了为旅客提供座位外，火车客车还可以提供餐饮服务、卧铺车厢和行李存放区。直到1977年停止使用之前，美国铁路邮车也属于客车的定义。“乘用车”一词也可以指大多数公路上的汽车，它们的设计目的是载客。
铁路客车可以有许多不同的设计。最常见的是单层开放式走廊客车。这种类型的汽车在汽车的两侧都有成排的乘客座椅，有一条穿过汽车中间的开放式走廊，类似于商用飞机的布局。
第二个最流行的变体是单层车厢汽车。在这些车辆中，座椅布置在隔离的隔间中，其中一些隔间可能包含过夜旅行的床。一条长长的走廊穿过车辆的远侧，以便进入车厢。有一些乘用车同时采用客车和车厢设计，客车座椅通常位于车辆末端。
在人口稠密的城市或流行路线上，通常使用双层或双层乘用车。这种设计通常出现在大城市，因为它可以在不需要额外车辆的情况下将列车的容量潜力提高一倍。这些汽车背后的想法是在不需要新的列车线的情况下缓解列车交通拥堵。
乘用车的另一个特点是观察车。观察车是列车上的最后一辆车，通常在车外装有“U”形车窗，以便乘客可以看到车外。一些观察车的座位数量有限，而另一些则相当大，可能包含用餐功能，甚至包括卧铺。20世纪50年代，大多数美国铁路停止使用观测车，但全世界的客运列车上仍有观测车。。
在极少数情况下，为长途旅行设计的铁路客车可能配备娱乐选项。一些乘用车甚至可以容纳电影院和迪斯科舞厅。随着现代高速列车不断缩短平均旅行时间，这种情况越来越少见。
许多现代乘用车依靠自行式电力驱动。这些类型的车辆通常以轻轨和地铁的形式出现在城市地区。在交通较少的地区，特别是在欧洲国家，铁路车辆使用自行式柴油发动机。与机车牵引型相比，自行式动力越来越受欢迎，尽管后者在世界各地仍然存在。
