第一位担任司法部长的女性是由比尔·克林顿总统任命的珍妮特·雷诺。她从头到尾为克林顿政府服务。2005年，乔治·W·布什总统任命阿尔贝托·冈萨雷斯（Alberto Gonzales）接替约翰·阿什克罗夫特（John Ashcroft）出任首位西班牙裔司法部长。
