如何价格是确定的(prices are determined)
在一个非常基本的层面上，经济学家知道股票价格是由股票的供给和需求决定的，而股票价格的调整是为了保持供需平衡。然而，在更深层次上，股票价格是由各种因素共同决定的，没有分析师能够始终如一地理解或预测这些因素。许多经济模型断言，股票价格反映了公司的长期盈利潜力（更具体地说，是股票股利的预期增长路径）。投资者被他们预期在未来将获得可观利润的公司的股票所吸引；由于许多人希望购买这类公司的股票，这些股票的价格往往会上涨。另一方面，投资者不愿意购买收益前景黯淡的公司的股票；因为越来越少的人希望购买，越来越多的人希望出售这些股票，所以价格下跌。
在决定是否购买或出售股票时，投资者考虑一般的商业气候和前景、他们正在考虑投资的个别公司的财务状况和前景，以及相对于收益的股票价格是否已经高于或低于传统规范。利率趋势也会显著影响股票价格。利率上升往往会压低股票价格——部分原因是利率上升可能预示着经济活动和公司利润的普遍放缓，部分原因是利率上升会吸引投资者退出股市，转而进行新的有息投资（即公司和国库券品种的债券）。相反，利率下降往往会导致股价上涨，这既是因为利率下降意味着借贷更容易、增长更快，也是因为利率下降会降低新的付息投资对投资者的吸引力。
决定价格的其他因素
然而，还有许多其他因素使问题复杂化。首先，投资者通常是根据他们对不可预测的未来的预期而不是根据当前收益来购买股票。预期可能受到多种因素的影响，其中许多因素不一定是理性的或合理的。因此，价格和收益之间的短期联系可能是脆弱的。
动量也会扭曲股价。价格上涨通常会吸引更多的买家进入市场，而需求的增加反过来又推动价格进一步上涨。投机者通常通过购买股票来增加这种上涨压力，他们期望以后能够以更高的价格将股票出售给其他买家。分析师将股价持续上涨描述为“牛市”。当投机热无法持续时，价格开始下跌。如果有足够多的投资者担心股价下跌，他们可能会急于抛售股票，从而加剧下跌势头。这被称为“熊市”。
