什么是网络设备？(network devices?)
网络设备是用于将计算机或其他电子设备连接在一起的组件，以便它们可以共享文件或资源，如打印机或传真机。用于建立局域网（LAN）的设备是公众使用的最常见的网络设备类型。局域网需要集线器、路由器、电缆或无线电技术、网卡，如果需要在线访问，还需要高速调制解调器。令人高兴的是，这远没有网络新手听起来那么复杂。
在网络中，一台计算机被指定为服务器，其他计算机被指定为客户端。服务器连接到外部集线器，客户端也连接到该集线器。现在，每台计算机都有一只脚在一扇公共电子门（集线器）上，它们可以使用集线器来回传递信号。为了引导这些信号，集线器包含一个称为路由器的设备。路由器相当于电子交通警察，负责处理计算机之间的数据通信。
听起来不错，但是路由器是如何区分一台计算机和另一台计算机的呢？答案是网络中的每台计算机都必须安装网卡。这些网络设备都包含一个唯一的地址。在硬接线网络中，称为以太网的特殊电缆从网卡连接到集线器。在无线网络中，网卡和路由器/集线器使用无线电波进行通信。
网卡在网络上标识自己，将所有请求发送到路由器，并包含唯一的返回地址。路由器读取“收件人”地址和“发件人”地址，并相应地路由流量。在其他类型的网络中，在本地网络上发出的所有请求都由路由器广播到网络上的所有机器，但只有具有匹配地址的机器响应，然而这并不安全，因为其他机器可以捕获未发送给它们的流量。
在线访问在局域网中是可选的，但如果包括，网络上的所有计算机都可以共享一个在线帐户。当在线访问可用时，路由器不仅引导本地网络上的流量，而且还处理向Internet发出的请求和随后的回复。路由器充当互联网的网关，也充当硬件防火墙，防止未经请求的流量从野外流回网络。
可以通过将路由器/集线器连接到高速调制解调器，或通过获取内置路由器/集线器的高速调制解调器，来添加对LAN的在线访问。高速调制解调器必须与联机服务兼容。大多数调制解调器是专门为DSL、电缆或光纤设计的，尽管有些型号可能使用多种技术，例如DSL和电缆兼容。
设置LAN时，所有网络设备必须兼容。如果使用以太网布线构建硬接线LAN，则网卡将设计为具有以太网端口。如果构建无线LAN，所有网络设备不仅必须设计为无线使用，而且必须使用相同的无线语言或协议。截至2009年春季，可用的最快和最新的协议是802.11n，而仍然广泛使用的较旧协议是802.11g。路由器/调制解调器和网卡都必须与同一协议兼容，才能相互通信。。
无线网络设备还可以进行Wi-Fi®认证，保证完全符合产品支持的标准或协议。Wi-Fi认证来自Wi-Fi联盟，该组织负责开发无线协议。许多无线网络设备在市场上被宣传为与一个或多个协议兼容，但缺乏认证。在建立业务LAN时，保证可能是一个重要的考虑因素，但对于家庭LAN来说可能不是一个问题。。
