什么是语法关系？(a grammatical relation?)
语法关系是语言学的一部分，它从语法的角度研究一个从句、短语或句子中元素之间的关系。研究这一点的主要手段是通过主语、宾语、附加语和补语之间的关系。然后，这些关系决定了句子中包含的单词的语法格和类别，从而有助于确定句子的语法。
语言学家用语法关系理论确定了关系语法的概念，并进一步发展了弧对语法。这两种理论都与诺姆·乔姆斯基的转换语法思想背道而驰，后者着眼于句子结构的深层含义。在关系语法中，语言的基本语法关系决定了句法关系的后期发展。换句话说，所有概念都是从功能中产生的，反之亦然。。
主语与动词和宾语的语法关系决定了结构。这使得主语成为句子中最重要的部分。在“鲍勃用奶油派打吉姆”一句中，鲍勃是主语，决定了句子其余部分的形式。
对象是与主体相关的事物或人。一个子句或句子中不能有宾语、一个宾语或多个宾语。在“鲍勃用奶油派打吉姆”这句话中，吉姆是第一个物体，奶油派是第二个物体。宾语有三种类型：直接宾语、间接宾语和介词宾语。
附加语是一段附加信息，可以在句子不失去意义的情况下删除。例如，“鲍勃打吉姆”和“鲍勃用奶油派打吉姆”一样有效补充信息是需要包含的附加信息。例如，“Bob throws”没有真正的意义，除非读者知道抛出的是什么；这句话的补充是“奶油派”
在语法关系领域，主语总是主语，宾语总是宾语。这是语法关系和句法之间的主要区别。一旦确定了句子中所有单词的基本功能和形式，就可以确定它们的主题或句法价值。
从这个意义上区分语法关系和语法就像是把一层蛋糕分开。蛋糕层是功能层，奶油层是主题值。虽然主语和宾语是恒定的，但它们中的任何一个都可以是施事者或受事者，甚至可以是句法方面的工具。
代理是执行操作的人或对象。患者是接受行动的人。代理使用仪器执行操作。以下三句话说明了单词的语法关系如何决定句法功能：
“鲍勃向吉姆扔了一个奶油派。” “鲍勃被吉姆扔的奶油派击中了。” “鲍勃被吉姆扔在奶油派上了。”
在这三个句子中，鲍勃是主语，吉姆和奶油派是宾语。然而，在句法上，主谓关系决定了不同的值。这意味着Bob是第一个中的代理，第二个中的患者，第三个中的仪器。
