什么是世界上最大的宗教？(the world's largest religion?)
根据《大英百科全书》2005年的一项调查，世界上最大的宗教是基督教，约占世界人口的33%。这大约是20亿人。其他大型宗教包括伊斯兰教（20%）、印度教（13%）、中国民间宗教（6.3%）和佛教（5.9%）。土著宗教占世界人口的4%，无神论约占14%。
在20亿基督教徒中，约一半由教皇领导的罗马天主教会代表，其余为东正教或各种新教教派的成员。基督教会在其历史上经历了几次分裂，最重要的是东西分裂（1054年）和新教改革（16世纪）。
基督教最初是一个犹太教派，自公元380年2月27日狄奥多西一世皇帝将基督教定为罗马帝国的官方宗教，结束了数百年来罗马神话中的国教以来，基督教在大约1600年的时间里一直是世界上最大的宗教。在此之前，世界上最大的宗教很可能是印度教，它太古老了，人们对它的起源知之甚少。20世纪80年代，弗拉基米尔大帝接受洗礼并将基督教传播到俄罗斯各地，基督教得到了另一个重大的推动。如果基督教在那之前不是世界上最大的宗教，那么它肯定会成为当时最大的宗教。。
基督教在15和16世纪得到了进一步的发展，传教士，特别是西班牙人和葡萄牙人，在非洲和美洲积极传播基督教。今天，南美洲仍然是地球上最纯粹的基督教大陆，90%以上的居民信奉基督教，几乎完全信奉罗马天主教。近年来，基督教虽然仍然是世界上最大的宗教，但在美国和欧洲等工业化地区却持续衰落，而在非洲和南美洲等发展中地区则有所进步。这种下降在丹麦和瑞典等国家尤为明显，那里只有2%的人口定期上教堂。。
尽管在整个20世纪，约三分之一的世界人口信奉基督教，但随着共产主义（无神论成为国家宗教）和怀疑主义的兴起，基督教在这一时期也面临着最大的挑战。然而，随着苏联的解体，许多前无神论者开始再次表达他们的基督教信仰，而在俄罗斯，俄罗斯东正教与政府之间有着密切的关系。
