如何家庭暴力是针对男性的吗？(is domestic violence against men?)
获得有关男性遭受家庭暴力的统计数字可能具有挑战性，因为绝大多数报告的家庭暴力事件都涉及女性受害者。美国律师协会的一项调查表明，25%的女性和7.6%的男性在其一生中至少会经历一次家庭暴力。其他调查和研究称，针对男性的家庭暴力只占所有官方收到的家庭暴力报告的5-10％。据估计，有15%的男性同性恋者报告说，至少有一次被同性伴侣的身体或性攻击的事件。从法律上讲，针对男性的家庭暴力还包括非亲属室友、男性兄弟姐妹和居住在同一屋檐下的男性子女的身体攻击。
即使使用对男性的家庭暴力最宽松的估计，也很难用 "普遍 "一词来描述这种情况。由于一些原因，男性仍然是最大的家庭虐待者群体，特别是对亲密伴侣的虐待。然而，这并不是说男性不会受到其伴侣的身体或性虐待。

在一个强烈重视男性大男子主义和阳刚之气的文化中，任何关于男性太弱而无法抵御女性攻击者的说法都可能证明受害者难以面对。配偶或女友可能会在情感上或精神上进行虐待，但在家庭事件中使用身体暴力和恐吓几乎总是被视为男性的首选武器。妇女可能会因为采取防卫措施而伤害到男人，但她们很少被执法人员视为教唆者或攻击者。
在许多家庭暴力的情况下，法律通常要求接警的警察至少要逮捕其中一名战斗人员。决定谁被逮捕的标准往往是身体是否受伤。在某些涉及针对男性的家庭暴力案件中，女性施暴者的身体伤害实际上可能比男性受害者的多。因此，有可能某些因家庭暴力而被捕的男性在实际攻击过程中实际上是受害者。
有时，警官会确定该事件涉及相互争斗，但为了恢复家庭秩序，男性仍会被赶出家门。完全有可能的是，针对男性的家庭暴力事件可能比原始统计数据显示的要高，但这仍然表明只有20%左右的家庭暴力行为是针对男性的。
