新产品开发的重要性是企业要生存下去就必须开发新产品的结果。换句话说，新产品开发与企业保持竞争力的能力以及企业的寿命息息相关。任何没有意识到开发新产品的重要性的企业都不会持续很长时间，因为企业都是关于创新和变革的，因此企业绝对有必要适应这些变革以保持相关性。新产品开发可能是针对目前尚未上市的全新产品线的新想法进行概念化，也可能是针对已经上市的产品进行升级。不管怎样，新产品的开发是公司应用商业战略的一个重要部分。
