什么是老式的？(an old fashioned?)
老式鸡尾酒可能是最经典、最古老的鸡尾酒之一，在某种程度上类似于在鸡尾酒真正开始之前在英国和美洲提供的许多酒精饮料。对旧式饮料的提及可以追溯到1806年，但直到19世纪80年代，这种饮料才被命名为现在的名称。老式饮料的发明很可能发生在肯塔基州的一家绅士俱乐部Pendennis Club，而这种饮料的流行很快将老式饮料带到了纽约市更为城市化的环境中。历史学家认为，纽约市的阿斯托里亚酒店是肯塔基州流行的第一家提供老式酒店。。

方糖放在玻璃杯里，通常是一个简单的玻璃杯。加入苦味剂来融化方糖，或者，少量的水可以融化方糖。一些调酒师跳过了方糖，而是使用简单的糖浆，以避免在玻璃杯底部出现部分溶解的方糖。
一旦糖块被苦味剂融化，杯子里就会装满冰块，并加入所选的酒精。这时，人们开始对老式咖啡是否应该含有水产生分歧，不管是平板咖啡还是苏打水。虽然IBA建议使用苏打水，但许多纯粹主义者认为水会降低酒精的味道，不应该使用。其他人则建议用清水稀释一点是最好的方法。
关于装饰也有相当多的争论。许多人添加樱桃和橘子片装饰物来强调糖的甜味。也有人建议用一片柠檬皮来代替“twist”，如果你有特别喜欢的饮料，你可以点任何装饰物。
对于旧式情人来说，酒的质量很重要。波旁威士忌，或黑麦威士忌往往是首选，因为其复杂的音符和质量。这种鸡尾酒的一些配方更喜欢白兰地，苏格兰威士忌也是一种受欢迎的替代品。由于酒精的味道仍然占主导地位，因此只为这种饮料选择优质酒精。很多人在判断酒的质量和复杂程度时，都采用很高的标准。
