交易处理系统是一种程序或软件，用于处理进出企业或公司的所有交易。该系统一个接一个地检查交易，就像在自动取款机（ATM）中一样，一次只允许一个用户。在这种情况下，“交易”一词不仅指财务方面，还指对整体信息的请求，如预订航班或只是登录在线银行账户。

与事务处理系统直接相反的是批处理系统。该系统同时处理多个事务或一批事务。主要缺点是处理后的事务不会立即返回结果。

现代的类比是一个连接到文件文件夹的torrent文件。在完全下载文件夹中的所有文件之前，用户无法立即访问文件。相反，事务处理过程会产生实时结果，从而带来更多便利，减少混乱。例如，当其他购物者将产品放入在线购物车时，在线购物者可以立即看到可用产品的数量减少。

软件或程序通常要经过ACID测试，以符合事务处理系统的资格。ACID代表原子性、一致性、隔离性和耐久性。原子性是指系统执行或放弃整个事务的能力。例如，注册在线银行帐户需要用户输入必要的信息。将字段留空或关闭窗口将导致用户放弃注册。

事务处理系统中的一致性意味着系统应在数据库管理的完整性约束的限制下运行。简单地说，编程应该是正确的。隔离的特性意味着每个事务都被视为独立和不同的，即使相同的事务同时发生。系统的持久性表明，如果交易成功执行，则无法撤销。如果系统发生故障，程序仍应通过编码日志保留数据。。

除了通过ACID测试的必要功能外，事务处理系统还应该是可靠的。这意味着程序失败的可能性最小或为零。在出现故障的情况下，恢复应该迅速，备份系统也会立即启动。系统还应仅对有限的用户完全可访问。例如，访客可以选择乘坐飞机的座位，但不能取消前一位访客预订的座位，这项任务只有有经验的程序员或工作人员才能执行。。
