什么是班图语？(the bantu languages?)
班图语是主要在非洲南部使用的一大语系。超过500种语言被归入这个家族，包括斯瓦希里语、科萨语和祖鲁语。班图语的学生有大量的资料要处理，因为他们的家庭规模很大，讲班图语的人分布在非洲各地。自1948年马尔科姆·古思里（Malcolm Guthrie）对这一语系进行了详尽的调查以来，已经发表了许多关于这些语言的研究报告。
班图语中的“班图”指的是一种共同的语言趋势，这种趋势可以在班图族的许多语言中找到。前缀“ba”是人的复数形式，“-ntu”或“-tu”是后缀，也表示“人”这些语言中有许多使用“班图”一词来指代人，这种共性在这个语言群体的命名中得到了认可。
这些语言是属于班托语系的一个较大的语系的一部分；班托语系又是非洲语言中的尼日尔-刚果语系，在非洲大部分地区广泛使用。有些人可能会区分班图语和狭义班图语；狭义班图语是Guthrie在研究中定义和讨论的语言。一些语言学家指出，在古思里时代，许多语言被忽视或不为人所知，他的分类可能应该更新以反映这一点。。
许多班图语使用重复来强调某一点，斯瓦希里语单词piga的情况就是如此，意思是“罢工”，可以用两次来表示某物被多次罢工。班图语通常也没有辅音串；每个辅音被一个元音分开，单词通常以元音结尾。这些特征中的许多也被用在外来词中，这些外来词可能被采用以符合班图语的示意图，如苏库鲁语中的“学校”当然，这些规则也有例外，任何语言都是如此。。
与许多语系一样，班图语有许多相似之处，语言学家可以追溯历史变迁。这些语言还揭示了它们所使用的文化的很多方面，因为人们用自己的语言保存着自己的历史和信仰。到非洲的游客可能会与班图语为难，因为班图语太多，方言也太多，有时交流很有挑战性。在许多地区，像洋泾浜语、斯瓦希里语或英语这样的语言被用作通用语。。
