什么是圣经时代的语言？(the languages of biblical times?)
圣经时代有四种主要语言：拉丁语、希腊语、亚拉姆语和希伯来语。圣经的《旧约》最初是用亚拉姆语和希伯来语写成的，而《新约》是用希腊语写成的。这种语言的混合反映了对《圣经》作出贡献的不同人群的起源，因为不同种族、阶级和教育程度的口语和书面语各不相同。四种语言中有三种被认为是死语言，这意味着尽管学者们仍在继续阅读和研究它们，但它们不再被使用。第四种是希伯来语，在中东部分地区和犹太圣经《律法书》中仍然使用。。
亚拉姆语可能是圣经时代最不知名的语言。这个词实际上指的是在中东广泛使用的一个古老的闪族语言家族。亚拉姆语与希伯来语有着密切的联系，希伯来语借用了文字作为字母表。圣经中的亚拉姆语不再被使用，尽管在世界上分散的地区，家庭中的现代语言在一些地区用于礼拜、宗教实践和交流。这种语言是巴勒斯坦的共同语言，很可能是耶稣自己所说的语言。它在七世纪被阿拉伯语取代了中东。
《圣经》时代讲的希腊语是普通的希腊语，与现代希腊语有关，尽管差异很大，以至于现代希腊语使用者无法理解。普通希腊语是比亚里士多德和柏拉图使用的精致古希腊语更基本的方言。虽然《圣经》中的希腊语不再被使用，但一些学者仍然用这种语言阅读《新约》。许多讲希腊语的人和学者生活在罗马帝国的东部，为该地区的语言和文化做出了贡献。

圣经时代很少有人说希伯来语，因为希伯来语在很大程度上已被亚拉姆语取代，但大多数犹太人都用希伯来语阅读圣经。19世纪的一次复兴使《圣经》中的希伯来语复活，保留了它作为一种活的语言的地位，尽管它只被少数人使用。
